Scott reaches world number three

Adam Scott’s meteoric rise in the world ranking continued this week when he moved up two further places to now sit in third position. Scott held the number three position in 2007 also after winning the Shell Houston Open but two weeks ago he sat at number 10 before winning in Dallas and then continuing his good form this week.
Scott’s share of 8th position at this week’s Wachovia Championship earned him enough points to move past Ernie Els and Steve Sticker and the 27-year-old now sits behind only Tiger Woods and Phil Mickelson (statistically) amongst the game’s leading players.
Scott will have another chance to make progress on the two ahead of him this week when he tees it up at the Players Championship, an event where he has often played well including a win in 2004, an 8th place in 2005 and a 6th place finish last year.
Woods, of course, is still recovering for the arthroscopic knee surgery he underwent three weeks ago and will not play at Sawgrass although Mickelson will look to defend his 2007 victory there.
Geoff Ogilvy is now in 6th position in the world rankings while Aaron Baddeley (17th), Stuart Appleby (26th) Robert Allenby (36th) and Nick O’Hern (50th) are the remaining Australians inside the top 50.
