Stars fall at QLD Amateur
IN: News | Queensland Mens | Queensland Amateur Championship (2008) | Round Two | 07 May 2008
The second day of the 2008 Queensland Men’s Amateur Championship at Bribie Island Golf Club has seen the fall of the number one and two qualifiers, and the domination of several Pacific Golf Club members.
Taking out the number one qualifier and last week’s Queensland Medalist Brett Rankin (Pacific), was fellow club mate Do Eun (Philip) An, who led for most of the round. An played excellent golf and finished off the match with a birdie on the 18th to secure victory. An will now take on another Pacific member, Gavin Fairfax in the semi-finals tomorrow.
Fairfax recorded another dominant performance winning his match 5&3 over Tim Bray (Colonial). Bray should be extremely pleased with the last two weeks after having to pre-qualify to get a start in last week’s Queensland Medal. It was quite an achievement to make it to the last eight in the Queensland Amateur Championship.
Fairfax will be confident after also winning his first round match yesterday 7&6 against State Team member Scott Smith (Pacific).
Taking out the number two qualifier, Ray Beaufils (Surfers Paradise), was Queensland Colts player Peter Hall (Indooroopilly). Hall led for most of the day and at one point the margin was 4 up. Beaufils began his comeback on the last nine holes, but left his run too late with Hall winning the match 1up.
Jared Consoli (Pacific) will take on Peter Hall tomorrow. Consoli got off to a slow start but quickly gained momentum and at one point extended his lead to 6up. McBain then rallied and reduced his lead to just 2up. Consoli won the 35th hole with a birdie to ensure his place in the semi-finals.
The Queensland Men’s Amateur dates back to 1900 and is Queensland’s most prestigious golf championship. Each match is held over 36 holes with the leading 16 players qualifying from last week’s Queensland Medal at Nudgee. The Championship has an impressive winners list including the great Norman Von Nida (1932) and more recently Jason Day (2004 and 2006).
The action continues tomorrow morning with the semi-finals starting from 7:00am.
