An, Consoli to meet in QLD Amateur final
IN: News | Queensland Mens | Queensland Amateur Championship (2008) | Semi-Finals | 08 May 2008
Day three of the 2008 Queensland Men’s Amateur Championship at Bribie Island Golf Club has seen some quality golf and the survival of Do Eun An and Jared Consoli, who will contest the final tomorrow. Both finalists are members of Pacific Golf Club in Brisbane.
Both players play out of Pacific Golf Club which will be extremely pleased with the performances of its leading players, including Gavin Fairfax who lost to An this afternoon.
The An and Fairfax contest was an up and down affair with both players showing signs of brilliance at various parts of the day. Fairfax got off to a great start and after 16 holes he led 4up. He went to lunch after 18 holes at 3up after a round, which would have totaled 70 (-2) in stroke play format.
The lunch break proved beneficial for An, who came out firing and completed the next nine holes in just 33 (-3), which helped him reduce the deficit to just 1 down.
It was a tight battle on the homeward run with An winning the 11th and 15th holes to nudge in front. An then held the lead over the closing holes. Fairfax missed opportunities on the 17th and 18th holes for birdies, and An won the match 1up.
An, at just 16 years of age, would have returned a score of 67 (-5) this afternoon showing the quality of golf was very high on the testing Bribie Island layout.
In the other semi-final between Jared Consoli and Peter Hall (Indooroopilly) Consoli took the early lead after the 3rd hole. Hall managed to get the match back to square after the 12th hole (par 5) which he eagled. Consoli would win the 13th and never let go of the lead from there.
Consoli led the match 2up going into lunch and by the 24th hole had extended the lead to 4up. A spirited revival from Hall was not enough and Consoli won the match on the 34th hole with a 3&2 victory.
Both players will be excited about the final tomorrow which is itself is the biggest achievement for both in their short golfing careers. No doubt the members at Pacific will be watching as the final begins at 8:00am tomorrow.
