Lester Peterson has won the 2008 NSW Mid Amateur Championship at Monash Country Club, with a 54 hole total of three over par.
Peterson, an accomplished pilot, won by two strokes from Victoria Golf Club’s Matthew Oldham (+5) and a further stroke from Moore Park’s Grant Thomas (+6), whose first round 77 proved costly in the final rundown.
47-year-old Peterson, a member of Bardwell Valley Golf Club in the south of Sydney, closed the final day with even par 72 but it was enough to add to his already impressive list of amateur victories, which include the 1987 Malaysian Amateur, 1988 Australian Amateur, 1989 New Zealand Amateur and the 1995 Lake Macquarie Amateur.
The NSW team of Paul Blake (AGC) and John Fearnley (Dunheved) were in a commanding position after going into the last round fourteen strokes ahead of their nearest rivals, Queensland. Paul Blake’s par round of 72 and John Fearnley’s 78 ensured a final round victory.
