Trio in Tokyo for Queen Sirikit Cup

BY iseekgolf.com | World Amateur Womens Tour | 2008 Queen Sirikit Cup | Preview | 27 May 2008

The Australian trio of Stephanie Na (SA), Kristie Smith (WA) and Clare Choi (Vic) have arrived in Japan to prepare for this week’s Queen Sirikit Cup at Sodegaura Country Club just outside of Tokyo.

The tournament was formerly meant to take place in Kandy, Sri Lanka in March, but was shifted due to political unrest in the region.

Na and Smith were both part of the team that travelled to the Philippines for last year’s Cup while Choi makes her debut at the event after previously representing her country at The Ashes and the Trans Tasman Cup.

The team will have an opportunity to practice on Tuesday before the competition gets underway on Wednesday. The Aussies come into the tournament in hot form led by Na and Smith who recently finished first and second respectively in the inaugural Karrie Webb Series. Choi also claimed three of the Series events to cap a magnificent year and give Australia a great chance of tasting success this week.

The Queen Sirikit Cup is a three-round event with two best daily scores counting toward each team’s total score. The winner is the team with the lowest overall score after the three days of play.

Australia will be up against 13 other nations including Trans Tasman rivals New Zealand, host nation Japan and defending champions Korea.

The Australian team is Captained by Sharon Dawson (WA) and coached by Ian Triggs (Qld).
