Michael Foster’s third round 70 at the Sunnehanna Amateur Tournament for Champions, sees the dual Western Australian Amateur Champion remain within five strokes of tournament leader, American Rickie Fowler.
Fowler, who qualified for the US Open on Tuesday, sits at 7-under-par following rounds of 66-69-68, a stroke ahead of his nearest rival, Zachary Sucher, at 6-under-par.
Foster commenced his American tour at Sunnehanna in fine style with an opening round 66, to be joint tournament leader with Fowler. Rounds of 72-70, sees Foster at T7 and 2-under-par. Ray Beaufils is the next placed Australian at T48 at plus-10, Beaufils’ tournament chances hampered by an opening 78.
A shot behind Beaufils is Justin Roach at plus-11, with rounds of 73-74-74 to be T49, whilst Brett Rankin will be looking to improve on his maiden American tournament, as the Queensland Amateur Stroke Champion finds himself well back in the field.
This time a year ago, Fowler was in the same position, leading into the final round, and will be seeking to claim the first back-to-back titles at Sunnehanna since Ed Loar in 2000.
“I’m in the same place that I was last year, which is good,” said Fowler, who won the Phil Mickelson award as the top collegiate freshman with Oklahoma State.
“I’m going to go out and try and play solid like I have been, play smart, play fairways and greens and make a couple putts.”
