Brendan Gielow shot a four-day total of 9-under par, 267, to win the 47th Northeast Amateur Invitational in Rhode Island. Gielow, of Muskegon, Michigan carded rounds of 68-66-67-66, to finished three strokes in front of Nathan Smith, the 2003 US Mid-Amateur champion who also closed with a 66.
Gielow in the process set a tournament record in becoming the only player in tournament history to post four sub-par rounds at the Northeast Amateur.
Entering the final round with a two-shot lead, Gielow started with all guns blazing. Three quick birdies through the toughest stretch of holes at Wannamoisett Country Club, holes 1-4, took him to 9-under-par, to set up his first major American amateur tournament. A few week’s previously, Gielow tied third at the Sunnehanna Amateur and following today’s win moves to 41 in the world.
Grant Scott was the best of the Australians with rounds of 71-72-71-70, to finish 8-over-par and T34.
“May game was a bit inconsistent this week,” said Scott, who finished with a T14 at the Monroe Invitational a few week’s back.
“Today I played rather badly, even though it was my best round for the week. The course is great, but it’s difficult to score well on.”
Matt Jager was the next placed Australian, the 19-year-old unable to build on his opening rounds 71-67, to eventually finish 76-73 and T46 at 11-over-par.
Jason Scrivener’s final round 1-under-par 68, was reflective of the form the Western Australian is capable of producing, moving him up the leader board to finish T51. Scrivener’s final round one of only handful under par for the day.
Scrivener and Jager now move to the Dogwood Invitational in Atlanta starting 25 June, to join the thirteen-strong Australian contingent that will start the tournament, including Matthew Griffin and Josh Younger who made their season debut in the US .
Scott has adopted a different schedule and will play the Cotton States Amateur, starting Tuesday at Bayou DeSiard Country Club in Monroe, Louisiana, with Rhys McGovern and a number of Victorian Squad members, including Nathan McMullen, David McKendrick and Ben Weatherly.
