Australia’s Stephanie Na has bounced back with a stunning three under 69 in the first round of strokeplay at the US Amateur in Oregon today. The top 64 will qualify for the match play, which kicks off on Wednesday (Thursday Australian time.)
After a disappointing effort at last week’s Canadian Amateur where the South Australian shot +24, Na has turned it around to place herself in contention for medallist honours at one of the world’s most prestigious events.
The 18-year-old is three shots off the pace, with world number two amateur America’s Amanda Blumenhurst in outright first on six under, closely followed by world number four amateur, Alison Walshe on four under.
Na is T3 with Canadian Amateur runner up Stephanie Sherlock. Sherlock’s conqueror at the Amateur, Victoria’s Stacey Keating did not have the best of days at the Eugene Country Club, shooting a round of four over 78.
Keating is right on the cut line in T58th.
Of the other notables in the field, Spain’s Carlotta Ciganda is circling at two under, while world number three, Meghan Bolger will have to play the round of her life tomorrow, currently she stands at +12.
14-year-old whiz, Dottie Ardina from the Philippines is T24 on two over along with North and South Amateur semi finalist, Cindy LaCrosse.
