Blumenhurst eyes US Amateur fairytale

America’s Amanda Blumenhurst will be hoping to go one better when she takes on Spain’s Azahara Munoz in tomorrow’s final of the US Amateur in Oregon.

Runner-up at last year’s event, the 21-year-old posted a grinding 3 & 2 win over 15-year-old Erynne Lee at the Eugene Country Club today. All week she has stated she would love nothing better than to cap off her amateur career with the national title.

Blumenhurst is in her last year at Duke University and will turn pro in May next year.

Tomorrow she takes on the current NCAA collegiate champion, Munoz who had her own battle today, taking on her best friend and room mate, Belen Mozo.

But right from the get go, Munoz took control and was 1 up after the first. Solid par golf gave the Spaniard the match on the 15th 4 & 3.

Tomorrow’s 36 hole final will be a glimpse into the future of women’s golf and as has been the case all week, the one who manages to stay out of the brutal Eugene rough is likely to be the one holding the trophy at the end of the day.
