Blumen great for Amanda at US Amateur

America’s Amanda Blumenhurst has ended her amateur career on a high, capturing the US Amateur championships with a gritty 2 & 1 win at Eugene Country Club in Oregon today.

Runner up at last year’s Amateur, Blumenhurst was behind for most of the day as Spain’s Azahara Munoz played the steadier golf. It wasn’t until the 31st hole that she hit the lead.

It was a position the 21-year-old would not concede, going on to two-putt for birdie on the par five 34th to lead by 2. A clutch up and down out of the greenside bunker on the 35th gave Blumenhurst the trophy after Munoz missed her 6 foot birdie putt.

Today was a stunning display of golf by both girls, with birdies often required to halve the holes. In the end it was Blumenhurst who sunk the putts that mattered, most notably her 5 footer for victory on the 35th.
