Mizuno’s new line of MP and MX irons have put ‘feel’ to the top of the design agenda. Inspired by a long term study into the science of feel, Mizuno set its engineers new benchmarks for sound and vibration in the design of its new irons.

Mizuno’s research pinpointed ‘vibration’ as one of the key human criteria for evaluating feel. Using a system of ‘Frequency Analysis’ Mizuno’s engineers established a pattern of vibrations that best communicated a pure strike and set to enhance them within iron heads for different types of player – the MP-62, MP-52, MX-200 and MX-100.

David Llewellyn R&D Manager for Mizuno USA led the project, “The key characteristic of Mizuno’s irons has always been their unique soft feel. The key ingredient is our one-piece Grain Flow Forging process, but we wanted to search more deeply into how material interacted with design.

“While feel is very much subjective, we were able to find vibration patterns through our ‘Frequency Analysis’ that best communicated feedback to our research panel. Not just the tone, but also the length and curve of sound were key to hitting the most satisfying feedback.

“We managed to bring this more subtle element into the design process – so while the new irons all hit new combinations of workability and ease of use, the amazing feel is what most golfers will notice first.”

The new MP-62, MP-52, MX-200 and MX-100 will be available from September 2008.

MP-52

The tour profiled MP-52 integrates a discreet pocket cavity for an uncompromising balance of shot-making and forgiveness.

Twin crescents milled into the MP-52 deepen its C.O.G – increasing stability from off centre hits, while remaining hidden at address.

A central impact bar and secondary muscle pad (DUAL MUSCLE) ensures that feel and feedback are tuned to meet professional expectations.

Available left and right hand. Standard steel shafts Dynamic Gold and Project X Rifle. Custom set build available from 3-PW.

  • Pocket Cavity: CNC Milled slot from 3-7 iron for increased forgiveness
  • Tour preferred profile: Pocket cavity hidden at address
  • Dual Muscle: Internal muscle reinforces impact area for exceptional feel
  • Dual Camber Sole: Reduces turf drag from increased sole width
  • Grain Flow Forged: 1025E Pure Select mild carbon steel for solid feel and distance control.
  • Double Nickel Chrome Plated: Polished finish and durability
  • Forged U Grooves: Optimum spin and control

MP-62

The MP-62 is a Tour Ready design based on the most requested adjustments and prototypes from Mizuno’s Tour Workshops.

Minimal offset and a versatile soleplate inspired by Luke Donald’s personal grind ensures crisp ball striking, while the centrally located COG* and consistent sweet spot height dictates a neutral left / right bias.

The Tour Ready profile is complemented by Dual Muscle’s enhanced feel, developed following research into vibration and frequency analysis.

Available right hand only. Standard steel shafts Dynamic Gold and Project X Rifle.

Custom set build available from 3-PW.

  • Tour-Ready design: Aggressively cambered mid-sole for crisp ball striking
  • Dual Muscle: Places mass behind impact for enhanced feel
  • Centrally located COG: Neutral left / right shotmaker’s bias
  • Grain Flow Forged: 1025E Pure Select mild carbon steel for solid feel and distance control.
  • Double Nickel Chrome Plated: Polished finish and durability
  • Forged U Grooves: Optimum spin and control

MX-200

The MX-200 takes Grain Flow Forged forgiveness a quantum leap forward with the introduction of Y-Tune.

A deep pocket cavity, milled to preserve MX-200’s one piece feel is complemented by a Y shaped reinforcement pad, extending a 5% larger sweet area into a toe orientated position – matching the miss hit patterns of amateur golfers.

Enhanced solidity in the hitting area and an aggressive triple cut sole design ensures MX-200’s place in the bags of both professionals and amateurs alike.

Available right (steel and graphite) and left hand (steel only). Ladies graphite (RH only). Standard steel shaft DynaLite Gold XP. Custom set build available from 3-PW.

  • Y-Tune Stability: Extended sweet area rotated to match toe miss hits.
  • Milled Pocket Cavity: 3-7 iron for stunning one piece feel and amazing forgiveness
  • Triple Cut Sole: Aggressive camber for improved ball striking
  • Grain Flow Forged: 1025E Pure Select mild carbon steel for solid feel and distance control.
  • Double Nickel Chrome Plated: Polished finish and durability
  • Forged U Grooves: Optimum spin and control

MX-100

MX-100 combines Y-Tune performance with an ultra pocket cavity design for the ultimate in iron forgiveness and ease of play.

A re-engineered ultra pocket cavity pushes the MX-100’s COG low and deep for a high ball flight. A massive effective hitting area delivers unwavering stability on off centre strikes.

Y-Tune’s cavity pad extends the MX-100’s vast sweet area higher into the toe area to match the miss hit patterns of amateur golfers for staggering consistency.

The MX-100 ladies model features re-engineered 5 degree loft gaps to suit slower swing speeds and an additional Ladies Lite shaft.

Available RH (graphite and steel) and LH (steel only). Ladies Graphite RH only. Custom set build available from 4-PW.

  • Y-Tune Stability: Vast hitting area rotated to catch toe miss hits
  • Ultra Pocket cavity: Low deep COG for extreme forgiveness
  • Modified U-Grooves: High traction and spin from all lies
  • One piece construction: Maintains consistent performance and feedback
  • Cavity impact pad: Ensures solid feel
  • Ladies specs: 5 degrees between each iron and two ladies flex shafts
