Kang goes low at Gary Player Classic

Bobin Kang has taken the first day lead at the 2008 Gary Player Classic, shooting an impressive four under par 67 at Brisbane’s Pacific Golf Club.
Kang, the 17-year-old one-handicapper from Arundel Hills on the Gold Coast, got off to a steady start teeing off from the 10th tee, recording a one-under par 35 for the nine, before moving into top gear with birdies on holes 2, 5 and 9 for a front nine four-under par 32.
The low round of the day, Kang’s 67 also leads the 16 – 17 year age division from Keperra’s Eric Park who fired an outward 33 and inward 35 for a three under par round of 68.
In the 15 years and under division, Far North Queensland’s Jesse Hanigan dominated scoring with a three-under par 68. The 15-year old 4-handicapper from Gordonvale Golf Club south of Cairns, raced out of the blocks on the front nine with an outward 33, including birdies on holes 5, 8 and 9, before adding another three birdies on his back nine for a final three-under par 68.
Hanigan leads the 15 and under age division by two shots from Kade McBride (Gold Coast Burleigh) and Cameron Smith (Wantima) who both recorded one-under par 70’s.
Joining Hanigan in second place overall for day one is Drew McLellan from Hills International whose 3-under par 68 was the best score of the morning session. The 1-handicapper started slowly from the 10th tee with an outward 37, before storming home with an inward 31 which included birdies on holes 2, 3, 4 and 9.
McLellan leads the 18 – 20 age division by a shot from Virginia’s Ben Fletcher (69) and Wynnum’s Josh Preston (70).
A record field of 208 players teed off in brilliant sunshine at Pacific, although temperatures were thankfully a little cooler than the 36 degrees that the Brisbane area had experienced the previous day.
Round two of the Gary Player Classic continues tomorrow with another two-tee start for both morning and afternoon fields.
