29-year-old Korean golfer, Ji Hi Lee, won the Japan Women’s Open Golf Championship after she overpowered Japan golf’s favourite daughter, Ai Miyazato and Korea’s Esther Lee to win by one at the Shiun Golf Club in Niigata.
Ji Hee Lee was tied with Miyazato playing the final hole but managed to birdie the par five to claim the outright lead. That left only Esther Lee on the golf course with any chance of catching her but she would need an eagle at the last to do so. She was able to secure a birdie to share second with Miyazato.
Lee plays regularly on the Japan Ladies Golf Tour, this event was her second win of the season in addition to ten other top fives and she now takes over at the top of the 2008 money list.
Playing in the third last group with Miyazato, Canberra’s Nikki Campbell started her final round strongly with three early birdies but two bogeys in the middle of her round would cost her any chance of challenging for the title. She finished in a share of 5th with So-Hee Kim.
For Campbell however if continues some improved form of late and the ¥5.3 million (A$65,000) she earns moves her to 39th on this year’s money list and reverses what had been her worst season to date in Japan.
