The Samsung World Golf Championship at Half moon Bay in California has been won by Paula Creamer, completing her fourth victory of the season and moving her past Annika Sorenstam and into second position on the ADT Money list.
Creamer defeated second year LPGA Tour player, Song Hee Kim, by just one shot. Despite the restricted field of just 20 players, the event turned into a real thriller over the closing stages with any one of six players still in with a chance over the final nine holes.
Kim applied most of the pressure, fighting back from a mid round stumble to draw level with Creamer when she chipped in for birdie at the 14th before the winner birdied the 15th from 25 feet to establish a winning break.
It was Creamer’s 13th top ten of the season, highlighting not only her success but her consistency. The 22-year-old has now won eight events in total on the LPGA Tour and her earnings in 2008 already exceed her previous best season in 2005.
Kim has yet to win on the LPGA Tour although this was her second runner up finish this season. A graduate from the Futures Tour after finishing as the leading money winner in 2006, Kim started this season with only partial exemption on the LPGA Tour but she will have no such worries in 2009.
Lorena Ochoa, Julie Inkster, Suzann Pettersen and Angela Stanford finished in a share of third.
Katherine Hull was again the best of the Australians finishing in 7th position adding yet another good week to her recent stretch of fine play. Karrie Webb continued her indifferent year after finishing 16th in the 20 player field although there were some encouraging signs in her final round of 70.
The LPGA Tour remains in California for this week’s Long Drugs Challenge in Danville.
