Nine Australasians secure 2003 Asian PGA Tour cards

Taiwan’s Sung Mao-chang celebrated his first week as a professional by winning the Final Stage of the Asian PGA Tour’s Qualifying School at Palm Resort Golf and Country Club today. The former amateur star fired his second successive -7 (65) to take the title by one stroke from Filipino Angelo Que and American Jason Knutzon.

Que, who led after the first and second days, closed with a 69 while Knutzon carded a 67. Overnight leader Kao Bo-song fired a disappointing 74 to finish equal fourth.

Jason King headed the nine ANZ players to qualify, following back-to-back 69’s and finished 6th overall to gain his 2003 Asian PGA Tour card. The New South Welshman finished 61st with AUD$35,000 on the 2002 Australasian PGA Tour Order of Merit and will looking to better that result on the Asian Tour this year.

Pat Giles was next best in 13th place with a four round total of 280 despite a final round 2 (74). Giles finished the second round in 2nd place and came into the final round today in 4th place. Jason Dawes finished alongside Giles with 280.

Others Australasians to claim their cards included Marcus Both (23rd), Shannon Jones (24th), Adam Le Vesconte (26th), Adam Fraser (27th), Richard Best (34th) and Scott Strange (35th).

The top three finishers from the school got a start in next week’s Caltex Masters in Singapore, which is joint-sanctioned with the European Tour.
