Tampion misses out in Italy

Victoria’s Andrew Tampion, who earlier this year won on the Challenge Tour, has missed out on a return to the European Tour after finishing last in the field of 45 at the season ending Apulia San Domenico Grand Final in Puglia in Italy.

As a result of his disappointing week, Tampion slipped to 30th on the Challenge Tour money list and thus missed out on one of the 20 European Tour cards awarded at the completion of the 2008 schedule.

Tampion played the European Tour in 2007 after gaining his card just a few weeks after representing Australia at the 2006 Eisenhower Trophy in South Africa. He had a reasonable season in his rookie year, given he was so new to the professional ranks, but lost his card and has played the Challenge Tour and, on occasions, the European Tour in 2008.

Tampion finished 10th early in 2008 European Tour season at the MasterCard Masters and then just two weeks ago finished 13th at the Madrid Masters but those events aside he has played mainly on the secondary Challenge Tour.

In August, Tampion won the Challenge of Ireland event, which at the time appeared to set him up for a one of the 2009 European Tour cards but although he had two further top ten finishes it was not enough.

Tampion will return to European Tour School.
