The inaugural LPGA event in China, the Grand China Air LPGA Classic, has been won by Sweden’s Helen Alfredsson, her stunning final round of 65 sweeping her to a three shot victory over rookie Yani Tseng with Laura Diaz dropping three shots in her last five holes before finishing third.
The victory continues a comeback season for Alfredsson, who not only won the Evian Masters earlier in the season but finished runner up at the US Women’s Open.
Despite her winner’s purse of US$270,000, Alfredsson will not improve on her current 5th position on the ADT Money List but given that she missed five of her first six LPGA Tour cuts this season it has been quite a turn around.
Karen Stupples was another who had her chance to win the event over the final nine holes but she struggled over the closing stages and finished 4th.
The best of the Australians was Lindsey Wright, who finally found some form after a run of recent cuts to finish 9th. Katherine Hull was 23rd.
The LPGA Tour now moves to Incheon in Korea for the Hana Bank Kolon Championship, an event co-sanctioned with the Korean LPGA Tour.
