A four-under 68 has Perth based New Zealander Michael Long on top of the leaderboard at the end of day one of the 2008 Oceanique WA PGA Championship, The Cut Golf Club, Port Bouvard, Western Australia.
Long, a former US Tour Player and winner on the Nationwide Tour produced a flawless display firing six birdies and two bogeys.
With strong southerly winds coming straight off the Indian Ocean, conditions made life difficult for a majority of the field with only fourteen players producing a score of even par of better.
Fellow countryman Mark Purser was another who was able to handle the windy conditions and posted a three-under, 69 to sit one back.
Defending champion Jason Norris made a perfect start to his title defence with a two-under, 70.
Norris was joined by tournament favourite Peter Senior and young Victorians Matthew Griffin and Kevin Conlong.
Griffin was Australia’s highest ranked amateur golfer in the recent World Amateur Teams Championship in Adelaide, before turning professional last week.
Round two of the Oceanique WA PGA Championship gets underway tomorrow from 7.00am from The Cut Golf Club, Port Bouvard, Western Australia.
