NSW amateur Scott Arnold has joined Craig Spence, Michael Hendry and Peter Senior at the top of leaderboard at the end of round one at the Cellarbrations NSW PGA Championship today.
Scott, the 23 year old younger brother of touring professional Jamie shot a solid five under 67 to join the four way tie at the top of the leaderboard at the Von Nida Tour event.
Playing in just his fifth pro event, the Cronulla local who has played in the AIS National Squad for the past two years shot an unblemished round including an eagle at the 10th and three birdies. He came home with a solid 32 on the back nine.
“I played consistently and didn’t hit any bad shots,” said Arnold. “I hit it well off the tee and holed a lot of putts.”
“The greens are pretty slow so you can be a bit aggressive on them so it’s not playing too hard. I’m a bit surprised that’s the leading score actually.”
As was Tour stalwart Peter Senior who also shot 67.
“I’m happy to be up there, said Senior. “I’m a bit disappointed with the way I played though. I didn’t miss any short ones but my irons weren’t good. They were a long way away.”
Last week’s Oceanique WA PGA Championship winner Michael Long was in the afternoon group with Senior and continued on with his good form shooting four under 67 to be a shot off the lead alongside Victorian Steve Jones who also played in the afternoon groups. The pair is in a group of six players who are a shot off the lead.
Defending champion Scott Draper finished his round at two under while 2008 OG Roberts South Australian PGA Champion Heath Reed signed for a one over 73.
