In very hot and humid conditions Killara Golf Club professional Greg Honen (NSW) has shot a second consecutive round of 69 (3 under par), to lead the Australian Masters Invitational at Emerald Lakes Golf Club on the Gold Coast.
Hohnen made his move early on the front nine with an eagle on the par 5 second hole, and then followed up with birdies on holes four (par 5), six (par 5) and nine (par 4), to make the turn at eight under par for the tournament. Homeward bogeys on the 10th and 17th holes saw Hohnen finish at six under par, leading a group of four players by a solitary shot.
Hohnen said “I was happy with my round today, I played great on the front nine to have 31, the eagle on the second was a great way to start. On the back nine I just missed a couple of birdie putts including one from just over a metre on 18.”
“The only bogeys I made today were on the 10th after finding the fairway bunker and on the 17th I hit a poor tee shot which found the bunker, unfortunately I was unable to get up and down”.
Four players – Stuart Reese (NZ), David Saunders (NSW), Michael Ferguson (QLD) and Tasmanian Elliott Booth are tied at five under par (139). Reese was not able to replicate the bogey free golf of his first round, making three bogeys and a double bogey to card a 73 for the day.
Saunders, Ferguson and Booth all had rounds of 69 to join Reese in a tie for second place. Booth was at one stage seven under par for the tournament, before the left hander dropped a shot on the par three 13th after three putting, then found the water on the 14th hole where he again made bogey.
Rodger Davis shot the low round of the day with a five under par 67. Although happy to be under par for the tournament, Davis said “I left a lot of shots out on the course today”.
Tournament drawcard Ian Baker-Finch (QLD) followed up his opening round of 72 with a similar score in round two, to be in a tie for 14th place going into the final round.
39 players have proceeded to the final round of the Australian Masters Invitational where the winner will be awarded $30,000 in prize money and a Yamaha golf cart.
The final round at Emerald Lakes will commence at 8:30 tomorrow (Saturday) morning, with the leaders to tee-off at 11:00 am. Play is expected to conclude at approx. 3:00pm.
