The Vintage, the Hunter Valley’s premier residential golfing community, has announced that Hall of Fame golfer and course designer Greg Norman will open The Vintage Golf Club at an official ceremony on January 27, 2003.

Following the opening ceremony, Norman will host a golf clinic for members and property owners and play in a 9-hole exhibition tournament in an Ambrose style against Australian Test cricket captain Steve Waugh, and captain of the Australian, New South Wales and Newcastle Knights rugby league teams Andrew Johns.

Joining these legends of golf, cricket and rugby league in the tournament is The Vintage Golf Club member Mr Lotz Lazar, who secured his place in the team by recording the best score at the first official day of play for members on January 4.

Just two hours’ drive north of Sydney, The Vintage is a AUD$450 million joint venture development between international community developer Medallist Developments and leading NSW developer the Stevens Group.

Chief executive officer of Medallist Developments, Mr Tony Fehon, referred to the official opening as a milestone event.

“We are honoured to have three classic Australian sporting icons to help mark this special occasion,” Mr Fehon said. “It will truly be a memorable experience for founding golf club members and property owners at The Vintage.”

Managing director of the Stevens Group, Mr John Stevens, paid tribute to the local council, who will be represented at the occasion by Councillor John Clarence, Mayor of Cessnock City.

“The community has shown great support for the project since we began construction in late 2001,” said Mr Stevens. “We are very proud to officially open The Vintage Golf Club.”

Those attending the ceremony will have the opportunity to tour the new $5 million clubhouse and attend a lunch overlooking the 18th hole.

During the lunch founding members of the golf club will receive commemorative gifts from Mr Norman. Nestled among the vineyards of the Hunter Valley, The Vintage is the first Greg Norman-designed course in New South Wales available for play to members of the public.

“My involvement with the golf course land at The Vintage goes back more than 15 years,” said Mr Norman. “To begin with the end in mind that far back and to see the dream become a reality is extremely rewarding. I am looking forward to celebrating the official opening of The Vintage on the Australia day weekend.”
