Townsend continues top form at Masters

Recent New South Wales Open winner Aaron Townsend displayed just what a fickle game golf can be when he bounced back from a horror first round by recording a second round of eight under par 64 and at 5 under he is now very much in contention at the 2008 Sportsbet Masters
Townsend was one of 39 players who was forced to return to the golf course early on Friday morning and four bogeys over the last five holes hardly gave him any hope of continuing the run that saw him win the NSW Open by seven shots two weeks ago.
He returned to the golf course just minutes after his closing his opening round and had nine birdies and a bogey for his round of 64, which equals the course record at Huntingdale.
Townsend, originally from Newcastle and now living in Sydney, has crammed a lot into the week between the win at the Vintage and this week. He had graduated to Stage Two of the USPGA Tour School in Texas but struggled there although he still has the prospect of the Final Stage of Japan Golf Tour qualifying next week.
Given the manner in which he tackled his second round today it might be that the European Tour is still a possibility as the winner of this event gains automatic graduation to the European Tour.
