Nitties takes the lead in California

BY Bruce Young | US PGA Tour | 2008 USPGA Tour Q-School - Final Stage | Round Two | 05 Dec 2008

A stunning second round of 63 by Novacastrian James Nitties has seen him take the lead after 36 holes of the PGA Tour’s Final Stage of qualifying in La Quinta, California.

Nitties played the Jack Nicklaus tournament course in round two and added to his opening round of 69 to be at 12 under and one ahead of Robert Garrigus and Harrison Frazar.

Nitties is on track to become one of the leading 25 players and ties who will secure their 2009 USPGA Tour cards. The tournament still has another 72 holes to play but Nitties, who has played mainly on mini tours and the occasional Von Nida Tour in season 2008, has clearly prepared well for his attempt to get to the PGA Tour.

Of the remaining Australians, Gavin Coles and Scott Gardiner are in 36th position, Matt Jones and Stuart Deane are 87th, Won Joon Lee improved to be 102nd, Jason Day a round of 69 to be 113th, along with Steve Allan, Adam Bland and Paul Gow and Andrew Bonhomme and Andrew Buckle 145th.
