Jones defends at Golf Nippon Series
BY Bruce Young | Japan Tour | 2008 Golf Nippon Series JT Cup | Preview | 04 Dec 2008
The final event of the Japan Golf Tour season the Golf Nippon Series JT Cup will be played this week at its long time home, the Tokyo Yomiuri Golf Club in the outer suburbs of Tokyo.
Brendan Jones, who last weekend formed part of the two man Australian team which finished third at the World Cup of Golf in China last week, will defend the title he won by just one shot over Toru Taniguchi.
Jones has yet to win in Japan in 2008 but he has had yet another good year and is currently in 10th position on the money list there. Coming off such a significant week last week he will be ready to defend his title and could well finish off the season with the win he has been looking for.
All Japan’s leading players are in the field as the event essentially brings together the leading money winners and tournament winners. The leading five players on the Japan money list are in the field namely Shingo Katayama, Azuma Yano, Hideto Tanihara, Thailand’s Prayad Marksaeng and the brilliant 17-year-old Ryo Ishikwa.
Australasians in the field are the aforementioned Jones and New Zealander David Smail. Smail, who played for New Zealand in China last week, is having one of his poorer years in Japan of recent years but has still done well enough to make this field.
Twelve months ago he finished runner behind Peter Lonard at the Australian PGA Championship which this year is being played opposite this event.
