Heineken Classic provides opportunity for bright young stars
BY Bruce Young | Australasian PGA Tour | 2003 Heineken Classic | Preview | 27 Jan 2003
The first event of 2003 on Australian soil gets underway this week when the Heineken Classic is staged at Royal Melbourne Golf Club.
Befitting an event of this standing, a top class field has been assembled with the world number two Ernie Els looking to defend the title he won last year from Peter O’Malley, David Howell and Peter Fowler. Els’ last four starts have yielded three wins and a second place last week in Singapore so he enters this event as the hottest player in the game right now.
Joining Els will be Greg Norman, fresh from the opening of his latest golf course design project in Australia, The Vintage Golf Club in the Hunter Valley, Nick Faldo, Peter Lonard, Thomas Bjorn and a high-class field of Australasian and European Tour players.
This is the first of three consecutive events co-sanctioned by both the European and Australasian Tours with the ANZ Championship in Sydney and the Johnnie Walker in Perth to follow.
Carrying a purse of $A2,000,000 with $A360,000 to the winner the event offers the opportunity for many players not already qualified to play in Europe the chance to force their way onto that tour by winning here. Jarrod Moseley did just this four years ago when winning the Heineken in Perth and just last week Zhang Lian-Wei gained access to the European Tour with a win in Singapore.
It might just be that one of the many talented young players without a tour on which to play this season creates such an opportunity for themselves.
