In what will hopefully be a prelude to the year ahead for Karrie Webb, she has picked up 12 skins and $US470,000 to win the ConAgra Skins event in Wailea, Hawaii today. Annika Sorenstam was second with three skins and $US70,000 Laura Diaz $US60,000 for her three skins and Laura Davies making up the numbers but not winning a cent.

Webb’s first skin did not come until the seventh where she won two and after Sorenstam had won one at the eighth all holes were tied until the 12th where Webb won another four. At the sixteenth she (Webb) earned another four with a four-metre birdie putt and added another at the seventeenth to total eleven. The eighteenth was halved so all four players proceeded to the first extra hole where both Davies and Diaz were eliminated leaving the final $100,000 up for grabs between Webb and Sorenstam. Webb won at the second extra hole to create a record total.

Webb said her most enjoyable skin came at the seventh hole when she had won her first. “There was a lot of pressure to get that first one and once that was locked away then I started to swing it much better.”

This may well signal the start to a better year in 2003 for Webb, who despite finishing fifth on the money list in 2002, struggled somewhat in comparison to previous seasons.

The next event on the LPGA Tour is the Welch’s/Fry’s Championship in Arizona on March 13th.
