An impressive field of the world ‘s best Australian and international ladies professional golfers will take to the championship greens at the $100,000 Contrabart ALPG Players’ Championship to be held at Horizons Golf Resort 13-16 February 2003.

The Contrabart ALPG Players’ Championship is Australia’s third largest professional ladies tournament on the ALPG Tour and has attracted an outstanding field including 66 from the elite international circuit as well as 67 of Australia’s best and up and coming professional golfers. The Championship will be run as a 72 hole stroke play with rounds one and two on Thursday and Friday and after 36 holes the leading 60 professionals, plus ties, will be eligible to contest the final two rounds on Saturday and Sunday. A Tournament Pro Am will be held on Tuesday, 11 February and official practice days being Monday 10 and Wednesday 12 February.

Over 15,000 spectators teemed through Horizons’ gates during the three day event last year with the Championship title going to Spanish sensation Paula Marti after an exciting three hole playoff with QLD ‘s Karen Pearce. Players to watch in 2003 include Paula Marti, Laura Davies, Rachel Teske, Lynette Brooky and Sophie Gustafson. Horizons’ own touring professionals Cherie Byrnes and Nadina Taylor will use their home course advantage and are sure to have a good local crowd supporting them around course.

There are five amateur entries including Nikki Garrett, Janelle Smith, Polly Travica, Kasey Henshaw and Kristie Newton all from NSW. Kasey Henshaw who currently works in Horizons’ Pro Shop said “she is very excited to get a start in such a prestigious Championship but will focus on her normal game plan”. Kasey became heavily involved in the Jack Newton Junior Golf Foundation as a junior and greatly attributes her time at the Foundation to her golf and life experience development. Australian golfing great, Jack Newton ‘s daughter, Kristie Newton had a practice round with Cherie Byrnes last Tuesday and found the course challenging but also looked forward to the experience of playing in the Contrabart ALPG Players’ Championship.

Tickets are on sale now from Horizons Golf Resort and are AUD$10 per person for Thursday and Friday, AUD$15 per person for Saturday and Sunday and AUD$35 for a tournament pass.
