For the second week in a row the European Tour takes place on one of the better courses they will play all year when the ANZ Championship brings tournament golf back to the New South Wales Golf Club.

Another course claiming the design talents of Alistair McKenzie, it was opened in 1928 and last played host to a professional event of this significance in 1998 when Englishman David Howell won the Australian PGA Championship.

This event is co-sanctioned between the European Tour and Australasian Tours and is somewhat unique, in that it is played under the modified stableford format, which has proved so popular at the International event in Colorado on the USPGA Tour. The format rewards aggressive play more than it penalises poor play and as a consequence the format can produce some dramatic swings over the last few holes of an event. Who will ever forget the finish that Steve Lowery put together at the 2002 International in Colorado when he finished birdie, eagle, par, albatross and par to nearly grab an almost unassailable lead off Rich Beem.

Last year the event was plagued by bad weather especially early in the week and it is hoped that the organisers will be blessed with better conditions this year. Last year of course the event was played at The Lakes Golf Club in Sydney.

The 2002 winner, Richard Johnson won narrowly from Scott Laycock and Craig Parry with local Andre Stoltz in fourth place. Stephen Gallagher, who was fourth at last week’s Heineken Classic in Melbourne, was fifth. Johnson is now a USPGA Tour player and will not be there to defend.

Early entries for the event include Peter Lonard, Craig Parry, Thomas Bjorn, Paul Lawrie, Paul Casey, Stuart Appleby, Jarrod Moseley and Niclas Fasth.

The event is worth $A1,750,000 with the winner to collect $A315,000.
