Executive Director of the Australian Golf Union, Colin Phillips, today announced that Holden, naming rights sponsor of the Australian Open for the past 6 years, had decided not to exercise its option to continue the sponsorship.
Mr Phillips acknowledged the enormous support of the Australian Open by Holden over many years “Holden has been a wonderful supporter of the Australian Open and golf in general and has been instrumental in the continued growth of the Australian Open”.
Holden’s decision not to exercise its option to continue was based on an unprecedented number of new vehicle launches in 2003 requiring a redirection of a proportion of Holden’s marketing budget.
Mr Phillips added “This has presented a unique opportunity to potential sponsors of the event. The Australian Open to be played at the new home of Australian Golf, Moonah Links, in November and then celebrating it’s centenary year at the Australia Golf Club in Sydney in 2004, is truly one of Australia’s premiere sporting properties. The event receives enormous exposure both domestically and internationally and we look forward to forging a new mutually beneficial partnership with the event’s next sponsor”.
