Rosie Jones to defend against strong field
IN: News | LPGA | Sybase Big Apple Classic (2002) | Preview | by Bruce Young | 21 Jul 2002
With three top three already to her credit this season 42 year old Rosie Jones heads back to the Wykagyl Golf Club, in New Rochelle New York, hoping to defend her title won last year after a tight battle with rising star Laura Diaz.
Jones, who was second earlier in the season at the LPGA Corning Classic, also in in New York State, has twelve career victories to her name and like Julie Inkster seems to get better with age. She won twice last season, her best season on tour other than in 1988 when she was three times a winner. She loves New York with five of her twelve wins coming this state which is not bad for a California bred lady.
She is up against it this week with Annika Sorenstam back, along with Karrie Webb, Julie Inkster, Laura Diaz and Rachel Teske. This therefore represents as strong a field as you can get in a regular tour event and strangely enough for a pretty ordinary purse, by current standards.
Michelle Ellis, Fiona Pike, Tamie Durdin, Wendy Doolan, Carmen Hajar and Mardi Lunn are among other Australians to line up.
