56-year-old Argentinian Vicente Fernandez claimed his fourth event on the Champions Tour and his first since 1999 with his three shot win over tour debutant, Irishman Des Smyth and Tom Watson in the Ace Group Classic today.

Fernandez was a star of European golf in the seventies and eighties winning several European Tour events and in fact as late as 1992 at the age of forty-six won the English Open. He followed in the footsteps of Roberto de Vicenzo.

Smyth birdied his last five holes for an inward nine of 31 and the medallist at last year’s tour school looks destined for a fine career on the Champions (I’m still coming to terms with that word) Tour

Smyth, another to win late in his career on the European Tour when he won the Maidera Island Open in 2001 was twice a Ryder Cup team member and an eight-time winner in Europe.

Rodger Davis, who was lying in fourth place after his second round 65, struggled in his last round to shoot 79 and eventually finished 34th. Graham Marsh was 39th and Stewart Ginn 44th.
