There are some parallels in the last two weeks between Jerry Kelly and Len Mattiace. Both players had threatened to win on occasions in their several seasons and had made a comfortable living on tour but a win had eluded both until this season.

Kelly broke the ice at the Sony, Mattaice followed at the Nissan and won again at last week’s Fed Ex, and now Kelly wins here in Chicago. Kelly is now third on the money list with $2,400,000 with Mattiace in fifth at $1,900,000. When you consider that Mattiace’s best previous season had been 61st and Kelly’s 35th it has been a turnaround season for both. Previous winner Robert Allenby, coming off a ninth place last week in Memphis, took a two shot lead over Neil Lancaster into the last round. He found birdies hard to come by as he again struggled with his putter. Despite the fact that he had led the event he had not putted well all week and that was further compounded by 30 putts on Sunday. Not bad, but not great, at this level and his three bogies and no birdies had him heading for a round of 75 and tenth place.

Kelly, however, had positioned himself with a front nine of three under, for a final nine charge and then reeled off four birdies early in the back nine to take a lead that he would not relinquish. Davis Love and Brandt Jobe produced last rounds of 66 to finish second and third respectively, the second runner up spot for Love in consecutive years here at Cog Hill.

John Cook was fourth, ahead of a return to Muirfield, the scene of perhaps his greatest disappointment in golf, when he let a lead slip as Faldo charged past him to win the 1992 British Open. Cook’s form of late has been interesting. In his last six starts he has been inside the top five on three occasions and missed the cut three times.

For Peter Lonard yet another great week, finishing with a last round 65 to get a share of fifth and another $US135,000. His earnings in his first season now top $US1,000,000, simply stunning. He actually threatened the leaders birdieing six of the first ten holes but a bogey at the twelfth slowed him down a somewhat.

Appleby also tied with Lonard for fifth his best finish of the season. He has made much of his $540,00 in the last two months after a slow start to the year. Allenby was 10th, Gow 20th (his best of the year), Senden also 20th, Hughes 27th, Chalmers and Elkington 38th, Allan 43rd, Ogilvy 58th, New Zealanders Waite 61st and Nobilo and Perks 68th. The only Australian to miss the cut was Pampling with New Zealander Michael Long also having another weekend break.
