Victorian left-hander David Armstrong has opened with a course record -8 (65) to claim the lead midway through the first round of the Bega Cheese NSW PGA Championship.

Armstrong fired two eagles and five birdies around the Pambula-Merimbula course to grab the top spot midway through Friday’s opening round.

Little to no wind and with the greens having been softened by recent rain, the course was left defenseless as under-par golf became the order of the day.

Euan Walters, the 1999 NSW PGA champion was one of a group of five players to lie in second place, two shots behind Armstrong. Perth professional Stephen Collins, Englishman Matt Hazelden, Kiwi Tim Wilkinson and Victorian Larry Austin joined him on that score.

Another seven players were tied on five-under par, while local hope, Jason Ashcroft of Tura Beach, shot 70.

Players are competing for total prizemoney of $100,000. The Bega Cheese NSW PGA Championship is the first event of the newly named Von Nida Tour.
