Queenslander Chris Downes remains in control of the Bega Cheese NSW PGA Championship following a second round -5 (68). However, New South Welshman Matthew Ecob made a move towards the leader with a superb -10 (63), the lowest round of his career, and sits alongside Bega local Justin Welford at -13.
Ecob has had a forgettable start to the year after missing the cut in all but two of the Australasian PGA events this year. He claimed 43rd place at the ANZ Championship and 71st at the Johnnie Walker Classic in Perth and sits in 68th place on the 2003 Order of Merit.
Downes followed his course record opening round of -11 (62) with a -5 (68) to stay three strokes ahead of his competition at -16. In contrast to Ecob, Downes has made his mark this summer with close to $130,000 in prize money and he currently sits in 12th place.
Shannon Jones from NSW holds outright fourth place at -11 with rounds of 66 and 69 with a group of five players at -10 and equal 5th.
Euan Walters won the NSW PGA Championship when it was last contested in 1999 and at -10 he is well within reach of another title.
The forecast for Sunday’s third round is for showers and light winds, which will make the low scoring of the past couple of rounds a little harder to achieve.
