Tiger Woods vs Ernie Els at Bay Hill Invitational
IN: News | US PGA | Bay Hill Invitational (2003) | General | 20 Mar 2003
The moment everyone has been waiting for has finally arrived and what better venue than Arnold Palmer's Bay Hill layout to see the world number one and two go head-to-head. 12 of the world's top 24 players are in the field and Vijay Singh returns from a rib injury, which has seen him out of the game now for several weeks.
This week Woods has a chance to become the first player to win the same tournament four times in a row since the great Gene Sarazen won the Miami Open for the fourth time in 1930. Els on the other hand is the only foreign player to ever win at Bay Hill.
Woods has secured two PGA Tour victories in three starts this year and is second on the money list with US$2,031,000 and just US$120,000 behind Canadian Mike Weir. Els has two PGA Tour victories in three starts in 2003 and is third on the money list at US$1,840,000. Els has also won several events outside of the US Tour this year including the Johnnie Walker Classic and the Heineken Classic in Australia.
Woods tees off tomorrow alongside Fijian Vijay Singh and Gene Sauers while Els will be accompanied by Frank Lickliter II and Korean K.J. Choi for the first two rounds.
All golf fans will be looking forward to a Sunday with Els and Woods going head-to-head for the title and perhaps a sign of things to come at Augusta in three weeks time.
