After two weeks in Australia in February and early March, the Nationwide Tour has completed its first event of the 2003 season in the US with Brett Wetterich prevailing in the Chitimacha Louisiana Open. This was Wetterich's first win on either the Nationwide or PGA Tour having played the USPGA tour in 2001 and 2002.
The 29-year-old from Palm Beach Gardens led into round four and held off determined challenges from Ken Duke, Steve Allan and veteran lefthander Russ Cochrane.
Steve Allan is in a category on the PGA Tour where he has only a limited amount of starts and like several others took advantage of a start here to give his game the continuity it needs for a return to the USPGA Tour whenever he gets the chance. The Australian Open Champion was in the thick of things for most of the tournament, although he will no doubt be disappointed with his last round 73. He eventually tied for third with Cochrane, one behind Duke and four strokes back from Wetterich.
Gavin Coles was 34th following an up and down week, which included a last round of 65. Mark Hensby was also tied with Coles in 34th, Grant Waite 41st, Scott Laycock 44th, Michael Long 51st and Paul Gow 71st.
There is a break for the Nationwide tour now until after the US Masters when the First Tee Arkansas Classic is to be played.
