The event first began in 1993 and has been played each year since, on most occasions at the Robert Trent Jones Jnr designed Clube de Golf Santo da Serra, a feature of which is its location overlooking the Atlantic Ocean.
The defending champion would have been Peter Uihlein although he is mixing PGA Tour and European Tour events this season and without any real success. Other recent winners include local Ricardo Santos and James Morrison, both of whom are in this week's field.
Santos and Morrison have both been playing reasonably well in stronger events in recent weeks and could continue their good form over this layout.
Lucas Bjerregaard appears to be one of the most in form players in the field and this appears a great opportunity for a European Tour breakthrough.
The Australian challenge is an eclectic one and is perhaps headed by the leading Australian last week in Singapore Terry Pilkadaris. Scott Arnold and former PGA Tour and European Tour winner, Mark Hensby will also line up.
