After sharing the lead alongside compatriot Josh Geary after yesterday's opening round, Daniel Pearce carded a solid one under par 70 in today's second round to hold the clubhouse lead after the morning field. However his outright lead would be short lived with Blyth, Jones and Kelly joining him at the top late in the day.
There is no doubt that this is the start Pearce was looking for, as a good finish this week will no doubt secure him a start next week in the Rockhampton Pro Am. "My form has been good this year and it is nice to be putting it together when it counts," Pearce said.
"There is still a lot of golf to be played over the next two days and therefore I am not getting too far ahead of myself. These opportunities are the reason why we put in the hours on the practise range so I am looking forward to the challenge over the weekend."
Hometown favourite and two-time City of Mackay Open Champion Anthony Johnson would have been disappointed with his opening round 74, though an eight under par 63 today has turned his aspirations of a third title into a reality and sits only three shots behind the leaders.
Pre-tournament favourites Scott Hend and Daniel Popovic have not done their chances of victory any harm and find themselves in a tie for seventh and twelfth respectively. They will be looking for early birdies to bridge the gap between them and the leaders.
The two-round cut was made at three over par, with 50 professionals surviving to play the final two rounds.
Round 3 of the New Pioneer Motors City of Mackay Open tees off at 6:40am tomorrow morning, with the final group consisting of Pearce and Kelly teeing off at 12:20pm.
