For the 51 year old it was his second senior major of the year having won the Senior PGA Championship two months ago and in doing so joins Gary Player (1987), Jack Nicklaus (1991), Hale Irwin (1998) and Roger Chapman (2012) as the only players to win the U.S. Senior Open and Senior PGA Championship in the same year.
Montgomerie won a three hole aggregate playoff against Gene Sauers to win the title after beginning the final round four behind the three time PGA Tour winner, Sauers, and will move to second on the 2014 Champions Tour money list behind Bernhard Langer.
Langer fell apart over the final nine holes recording 41 on the way home and eventually finished 9th.
Peter Senior recorded his best finish of the season and his first top ten of 2014 when he tied for 9th.
Steve Elkington finished 49th.
