When Colin Montgomerie started 2005 he was ranked number 80 in the world and had just come through what had been perhaps the most difficult period of his life. The impact of his pending separation and then split from his wife had obviously affected the play of Montgomerie throughout 2003 and 2004 where he had recorded his worst seasons since 1990.
