In the first event of the 2004 PGA Tour season, Stuart Appleby won the US$5.3 million Mercedes Championships at The Plantation Course in Kapalua, Hawaii. Appleby's one-stroke victory over Vijay Singh means that the Australian improves four positions to No.11 in the first published Official World Golf Ranking of 2004.
